There's nothing like falling into bed after a long, exhausting day. But how many of us can say we actually get a good night's rest? Sure, we may be able to secure 8 hours a night but is that enough? Short answer, no. The quality of our sleep is just as important as how many hours we put in.

Many factors play into the quality of sleep we get each night, but our mattress is one of the most important. In this series, we'll be taking a look at the most popular types of mattresses to help you make the best decision on your next upgrade.

What is an Innerspring Mattress?

Currently the most purchased type of mattress, the innerspring variety are built around springs, or coils, that compress you when you put pressure on them. Different brands and types offer varying sizes and shape of these coils, directly affecting the quality of the mattress. Typically, the more coils the mattress has, the higher quality, or more comfortable, it will be.

What Are the Benefits?

Innerspring mattresses have been popular for over a century. This is primarily due to their simplicity and relatively cheap prices compared to other mattresses. Unlike gel and foam, innerspring mattresses offer far more, well, spring, than any other type of mattress. They're also much cooler than foam or gel mattresses and reduce the amount of heat buildup while you're sleeping.

Any Downsides?

Though affordability plays a huge factor in what mattresses we buy, there are some things to keep in mind when looking at an innerspring mattress.  Namely, movement separation. If you're sleeping solo, this won't be an issue. However, if there's someone else you're sharing the bed with, you will almost definitely feel them move during the night. If you're a light sleeper, this can interfere with the quality of your sleep.

Another thing to consider is durability. Innerspring mattresses wear out faster than foam or gel. The coils lose their spring and you'll begin to notice that your body sags when you lie down.

What's the Verdict?

While durability and movement separation can be big issues for some, the price of innerspring mattresses can't be beat. You can find high quality coiled mattresses for cheaper than certain low-end gel or foam mattresses. And while the components are cheaper, the mattress still provides a solid, quality night's rest. For sleepers looking to pair affordability with quality, you can't go wrong with an innerspring mattress.
